First Appointment
You can help make your child’s first visit to our office easy and fun by explaining that he or she will sit in a special chair as we “count” all the teeth. We have designed our office to create a warm, and child-friendly atmosphere. Please assist us in creating a positive experience for your child by avoiding any negative language (“needle,” “shot,” “drill,” “hurt,” etc.) that may scare your child. Despite all of your preparation, your child may still be apprehensive in this new experience and he or she might cry. This is a normal reaction to the unknown; do not be upset or discouraged. Most children quickly learn to cooperate, relax, and enjoy the visit to our office. Our highly trained staff will determine the most effective means to make this visit an easy one for your child. We will thoroughly explain each procedure to your child utilizing a method known as Tell-Show-Do. This often alleviates many children’s fears.
The initial appointment will consist of a thorough examination of your child’s teeth, facial growth and development, cleaning, and fluoride treatment. X-rays will be taken to aid in our appraisal of your child’s dental health and to predict future development.
We believe that one of the most important services that we have to offer is a plan for preventive dentistry. For this reason, we spend considerable time at the initial appointment discussing preventive measures that include brushing and flossing techniques, fluoride therapy, and dietary considerations. By educating the patient and parent about good oral hygiene, habits can be instilled early and maintained through adulthood. It is our desire to help raise a child cavity free and have a healthy positive attitude about dentistry that will last a lifetime. Regular dental examinations can help detect potential problems, make sure tooth development and eruption are normal, and help detect future orthodontic problems. If dental treatment is found to be necessary during the initial appointment, additional appointments will be scheduled.
